A Place in History: Student Journal for Place-Based Humanities
Tell a Story of Your Community and Its Connection to the Wider World
Identifying A Place in History
University Liggett School's Place-Based Humanities Program invites eighth through twelfth grade students from across the country to participate in its semi-annual student journal. You have an opportunity to write an article telling a local story from your community and connecting that story to broader regional, national, or world themes.
Submissions:
Should be relevant to you and/or your local community (we understand that “local community” can be defined in many different ways; you may define your local community however you wish).
Must include a title/cover page including the following information: title of the article, author name(s), date written, school/organization
Must be written in English
Must include citations (in text and bibliography) according to MLA, APA, or Chicago Manual of Style
Average 2500 words; we will accept longer and shorter submissions based upon topic
Should be shared via Google Doc or Microsoft Word document
Must be the student’s original work and not submitted to any other publication or contest

Submit an Article
Participants whose submissions are selected for publication will not only earn a place in an upcoming publication, but will also earn a certificate and a $100 stipend.
Articles are accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted at any time. Feedback will be provided on each submission.
Submissions will be assessed for inclusion in "A Place in History" on the following criteria:
Place-Based Content (connections to the local community and broader themes)
Research (credible, relevant, and scholarly sources are used and cited appropriately)
Organization (including structure, clarity, and flow)
Style and Mechanics (spelling, grammar, formatting, etc.)
